About Letterpress

Letterpress is a unique printing technique that is about as close as we come today to printing with the same techniques used in the 15th century with Gutenberg´s movable type and the development of the first printing presses that followed.

In this ages-old process, the artwork is created using an image in relief that is then literally pressed into the paper, creating an indented image. The special papers that are used in letterpress printing enhance this indentation, or `bite´. Many of these papers are not available for use on modern digital presses, and further add to the uniqueness and beauty of the printed piece.

Previously, the relief image was created using metal type or raised surfaces made from wood, metal or linoleum where the relief image was created by cutting or burning away the white areas. More and more often though, polymer plates are used instead. Some letterpress machines are still run by hand, but many are now at least partially automated, speeding up the production process as well as improving the overall quality of the print. However, letterpress is an art form as much as it is a craft, and producing a well-done letterpress piece is no small feat. Fewer and fewer pressmen today have the skills necessary to operate these types of machines.

Plume is proud to offer a product that honors the craftsmanship and beauty of letterpress printing and we strive to produce products of the highest quality.
